The era when the only transportation on the west coast of Florida was its water ways is brought to life in the Work Boats of Southwest Florida exhibit at the Boca Grande Lighthouse. And visitors and residents have until July 10 to see the exhibit which has been a joint venture with Historic Spanish Point on Sarasota Bay in Osprey where many a wooden skiff or sharpie was built to accommodate water way "trucking" and transportation. Last Saturday a journey to Historic Spanish Point brought us to the site of Florida pioneer family, Frank and Lizzie Webb Guptill's homestead built with lumber and materials hauled by boat. The crops raised on the homestead were shipped by their own schooners to Key West. Capturing this era in time is the object of the Lighthouse exhibit where the Lizzie G, a wooden sharpie measuring 23 feet, will be on display until July 10. We got to see the Lizzie moored with two other sailing vessels at Spanish Point as well as the workshop where volunteers are working on another period vessel, the "Magic." And the methods and tools used in the process are the same used from that time period. See more on Historic Spanish Point with photos on Page 19.
