to the Editor:
In February of 2003, the Barrier Island Parks Society (BIPS) and the Gasparilla Island Conservation and Improvement Association (GICIA) formed a partnership with a very important common goal: to acquire the FPL property at the south end of the island and forever protect it from development. In June of 2005, that partnership has not changed. BIPS and the GICIA are continuing to work together to acquire the FPL property at the south end of the island which ultimately will increase the size of our State Park property by approximately 9.2 acres. At the present time, FP&L is not ready to sell the 9.2 acres to anyone and we have no idea when this property will be offered for sale. But we readily agree that our principle joint goal is to develop the most effective means of acquiring the property. We also agree that efforts to develop an appropriate partnership with the Florida State Parks and to find public funding will continue as a matter of priority, |
|
but that private fundraising will not start in earnest until we have a better understanding of public possibilities and hopefully the purchase price sought by FP&L. It is important to us and the community of Boca Grande that our ability and willingness to work together is fostered and recognized and not presented in a way that suggests we are divided. Even under the best circumstances, acquiring the 9.2-acre property will require a massive effort by the entire Gasparilla Island Community. The commitment of BIPS and the GICIA and the shared goals of these two organizations remain intact and strong; united in their dedication to working together for the future of Gasparilla Island and its residents. Sincerely, Cappy Warner, President, GICIA; and, Pete Durno, President, BIPS
