them the way they did, "
said Denton. "And
I can say that with the right size net you can catch the right
size fish without bothering anything else. Commercial fishermen I
knew were always careful about their catches."
New regulations concerning blue crabbing are also
on his mind. In February, the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission proposed new industry management rules
that strive to limit crabbing endorsements. Rules already in place
require keeping records and tagging traps then filing reports to
the state.

Working the traps is a back-breaking job, but it’s
a job Denton loves.
Placida was also the place where Dr . Eugenie
Clark, the "Shark
Lady" started
the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory in 1955. Five years later she
moved the research center to Sarasota. William R. Mote became the
major benefactor, and the center became the Mote Marine
