Boca Grande Plan
Passes Lee County Commission
Historic
Preservation Board Reinstated
| by Linda
Fudala
All
commissioners except Ray Judah voted for the amendment that also
restored language previously removed. That restored language
included support for the tarpon fishery and seagrass beds. The
state has 60 days to review the plan before returning it to |
Lee County.
The panel s
community plan will now also be subject to Charlotte County
examination. Lynne Seibert said it was a "stunning
victory" to
have the preservation board proposal restored. The meeting
ended just before noon Wednesday. |

Builds for World's Richest Tarpon Tourney
By Craig Lutz
Director of the Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce
| The
tarpon fishing success enjoyed by the Howl at the Moon, Boca
Grande Fishing Guides Association Invitational and the Chamber's
Ladies Day Tarpon Tournament has members of the Worlds
Richest Tarpon Tournament Committee smiling. "We
think the good fishing and fun experienced by the other
tournaments is terrific and we're
looking forward to a great WRTT in July."
reports chamber President,
David McHugh. The WRTT, featuring the traditional "Pass
Tournament" and
new "Beach
Tournament, will be fished July 6-8. Rule changes this year allow
for Pass fishing the hard falling evening tide on a new moon.
Additionally, Pass anglers will have their choice of steel,
monofilament or fluorocarbon leaders. Beach Tournament
competitors, with observers onboard, will roam open water along
area beaches and throughout Charlotte Harbor looking to secure the
most releases. Entry fees for each tournament are $3500 plus tax. "The
leader and time changes, along with the addition of
the Beach Tournament, certainly
provide anyone who wants to fish an exciting opportunity."
said McHugh. |
Fishing for tarpon in Boca Grande Pass is a long-time
tradition. This year there will be a new "Beach Tournament."
Rule changes this year allow for Pass fishing the hard falling evening
tide on a new moon.
|
McHugh. "We're
giving a shout out
to anglers who may want to fish one or
both tournaments to sign up now."
Anglers and Captains entered in the
tournaments receive complimentary
2005 WRTT
Bimini Bay shirts, hats,
Captain's
Brunch invitations, goody
bags and Boca Bills
that can be used same as cash at participating island
businesses. The Awards Presentation
for both tournaments has
been incorporated into an expanded Silver King Festival to be held
Friday, July 8th. An art show, silent auction, arts &
crafts |
sale, music,
dancing and of course, activities for the children will all be part
of the Silver King experience. So in case you were wondering what
time it was, its time to get excited for an island tradition. For
information on tournament entry or additional questions, please

Surgeons
Seminar A Success: 'The Secret's Out
|
By Linda
Fudala-Tucker
About
75 surgeons and their families spent Memorial Day weekend in
Boca Grande. The event included seminars for the doctors, and
fun events for the rest of 200 or so who accompanied them.
" I
think the general consensus on Monday was that we'd
like to do it again here,"
said Dr. John Moenning,
president of the Florida Chapter of
|
American College of Surgeons and Boca Grande
resident.
When lightning knocked out the air conditioning
in the Gasparilla Inn Beach Club, a seminar was moved to the
Community Center Auditorium, but other than that, said Moenning,
the event was a total success.
" A
number of us caught enough tarpon to get the fever,"
said Moenning. "The |
Dr.
John Moenning
secret 's
out now." See
more photos on page 20.
