"Howl at the Moon" With Huge Catch
Captain Sandy
Melvin's First Night-Time
Invitational
Tournament

Captain Sandy Melvin hosted his own "Howl At The Moon" invitational tarpon tournament last weekend. It was a small, invitation only, attempt to "showcase the quality of night fishing and the expertise of local guides," as described by Capt. Melvin. And it worked. Eleven boats set out and 71 tarpon were caught and released. Melvin 's own boat, the Boca Blue, finished in first place with 16 releases. Three fishermen aboard Boca Blue had never caught a tarpon before this event. Brothers Brian and John Corcoran, of Jam's, and Tom Murtha each caught their first, second, third and fourth tarpon that night. Twelve tarpon on their first outing is a good beginning.Bob Melvin, local Realtor and Sandy's brother was the fourth fisherman. |
Captain Frank Davis ' boat, the Had'em, was second with 11 releases and the tiebreaker by calling the 11th fish before Captain Mark Liberman's Teal called in their matching 11th fish for the third place finish. It was a great night of tarpon "catching" in the pass. |
