When
you're
raised Italian with fabulous cooks like a mother and
grandmother, it's
no wonder Gene Marra grew up to become a chef and restaurant
owner.
According to the Fall/Winter 2001 edition of "Northeast
Georgia Living" magazine, it was the influence and guidance
from grandmother and mother who nurtured the chef-to-be. "I
grew up with an Italian grandmother who was a phenomenal cook. I
still use her marinara sauce. My mother is a clone of my
grandmother. I've watched her over the years, and I still do a
lot of things that she does." The rest he learned from the
Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park where he graduated in
1978. |
Recently re-located to Boca Grande from Atlanta,
Ga., Marra, formerly of Marra’s Seafood, Nacoochee Grill, Big
Bite Catering and 12 other independently owned restaurants, will
bring 20 years of teaching experience and 34 years of culinary
training to the Boca Grande Community Center starting Nov. 16.
He will teach a series of in-depth classes ranging from a
regional American Thanksgiving feast to a personal ”Italian
inspired” slant on a genuine Tuscan Christmas dinner. Marra
will also be presenting a series of classes devoted to the Province
of France, a journey to Thailand and a class on preparing
upscale and contemporary hors d’ouvres and canapés for an
incomparable “Boca Grande” cocktail party. Class size is
limited to 40. |
