Had the weather been any better Saturday, there would have been over 500 attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration of the Friends of the Boca Grande Community Center 20th anniversary. As it was, about 400 turned out despite 30 mph winds and chilly temperatures.

Ted VanItallie described the Boca Grande Historical Society's new home in the Teacherage, "the realization of a dream."

Military Mom, Jan McHenry to Speak Monday on Troop Support Project

By Linda Fudala-Tucker

Jan McHenry has been a hairstylist for 15 years for Sue Hoots at Courtyard Hair, but since 1988, she's been a Military Mom. That was the year her son, Patrick McHenry graduated from West Point Military Academy.

Now a Major, Patrick McHenry saw service with the 75th Regiment of the Army Rangers in Fort Benning, Ga. and now serves second in command with the 110th Infantry Division, National Guard in Iraq.

Each and every week her son, along with over 1,000 members of his unit

get care packages from Jan McHenry, whose husband, Robert died on July 11. While grief could have consumed her, her faith and optimism has kept her moving forward.

"Life goes on, and I know he's in a far better place. There's too much to do in this life," said Jan. What she's been doing for over a year is sending at least 25 large packages of items to her son's unit. On Monday, 1 p.m. in the Community Center auditorium, she will talk on what she’s been doing, why, and how to help as part of the United Methodist Women project started on the island by Helen Kaiser, president. The

two women became acquainted at the salon when they began sharing about their sons’ military background that included West Point for both. Continued on page 14
