is building in a grass roots effort to organize a contingency to
oppose a tax that would be used to eradicate the iguana
population on the island that has grown to an estimated 10,000.
Lee County Commissioners are holding a hearing
on the matter on March 14, 5 p.m. in Fort Myers and residents
against the tax are expected to show up en masse thanks to the
effort of island resident, Bonnie McGee who has reserved a
50-passenger bus for the meeting.
"I just think there needs to be warm
bodies at that hearing to show commissioners that a lot of people here think there are other
ways to deal with the issue without another tax," she said.
"I can get a |
second bus if need be."
Tom McKenzie is also against the tax and will
be there as well. He wants a question answered: "Why are
federal funds dedicated to the eradication of other invasive
species and not this species?"
"(Commissioner Bob) Janes has said it is
a locality situation unique to Boca Grande. Well, those iguanas
are certainly going to cross the causeway if they haven't
already done so," said McKenzie. "The
