| the current roadbed. Both plans will
jog traffic slightly on the approach and exit ramps and presume 35
miles an hour as the speed limit. The engineering surveys will not
be complete for about 30 days and are needed to determine if
additional right of way will be needed.
The costs estimates are $5.225 million (lowest) and $6.965 million (highest.) Both remaining alternatives feature wider traffic lanes and sidewalks for both the Central and the South Bridges. The replacement South Bridge will also need to be a couple feet higher than the current span to reduce the chloride contamination. One suggestion would have a separate pedestrian bridge, instead of a |
sidewalk, that would be available to
carry utilities.
It was suggested at the meeting that the South Bridge channel be filled in to eliminate that bridge. Everyone recognized the environmental challenge and inquiries will be made with the U.S. Coast Guard to determine the idea's feasibility. Kisinger, Campo and Associates developed the plans and Paul Hauck presented them with Tom Shaw's assistance. Although the bridge authority manages the causeway it is actually owned by Florida. Department of Environmental Protection |
employees were on the causeway
Tuesday doing a site survey leading to the removal of the exotics:
Australian Pine and Brazilian Pepper.
